Katie Rempe: Jim, can you believe this? We are in our final episode of this season already!
James Divine: It makes sense. it's the end of autumn. We're soon to come upon winter. Maybe it's time to hibernate and rest and relax and go with the season.
Maybe this episode, we're just going to.
Speak quietly by the fire and lull all of our listeners into a sweet slumber of winter to drink your tea and watch the candlelight.
Katie Rempe: Join us on this very special episode of Knit A Spell
Light From Lantern presents: Knit A Spell.
I'm magical maker: Katie Rempe.
And I'm the maker of magic: James Divine.
Join us as we stitch together the symbiotic relationship between crafting and 'The Craft'.
Katie Rempe: wake up!
Maybe we should do like a fun ASMR episode over the break for people to enjoy.
James Divine: Little fire crackling a little, chillax, but a friend of mine was reading the book, whole three 60 and what she got out of it as a witch was.
Why aren't we following the seasons with our diet and with our like way of being? We live in a society that is always in summer mode. Of like work produce up into the right, up into the right.
We think about having a diurnal rhythm, a day and night rhythm, but do we have a annual rhythm where the harvest is in and now it's time to relax and to spend time with family and to nestle in for the winter there's a.
time to do that. And do we give ourselves that opportunity? Do we give ourselves the reflective period over the winter? So this is our last episode of this season and we get to take time off to visit family and to enjoy the holidays and to, Not overdo it too much and just have a good time and to see you again in March when the spring starts and we're springing into action.
Katie Rempe: That's right. All the new things will be in season at that point. You'll be ready to consume more content because yeah, like you said, not enough people take a break.
I like to hibernate during December. And if you're someone that's lucky enough to get a hand knit gift, That's what I'll be working on. Otherwise, selfish knitting for the rest of the month for sanity's purpose.
James Divine: Selfish knitting.
Selfish knitting. What is selfish
Katie Rempe: knitting? It's knitting just for yourself and no deadlines, no time frames, just whatever you want, whenever you want. Don't worry about it. It's just for you.
James Divine: It's just selfish knitting. Just
Katie Rempe: selfish knitting.
James Divine: You can buy knitting online at Macy's, that's right. Yes, their Black Friday sale. Oh,
Katie Rempe: God. We're just still going on all month and all year. I don't know.
James Divine: Speaking of black and red and orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, white, all the colors. That has been our theme all season. Now it's our last episode, Katie, and we have some reflections. Because this is the week after Thanksgiving, we have this extra week in November.
How was your Thanksgiving generally? It was
Katie Rempe: good. I traveled on the times that had the cheapest tickets, which maybe weren't the most convenient days to go, but I'll tell you. Ultimately, nobody was in the airport and I loved it.
So I'm all for traveling on Black Friday. Not participating otherwise. It was amazing. I had the entire row to myself.
James Divine: Geez, you had a whole row to yourself. That's amazing. That never happens.
Katie Rempe: I felt very VIP
James Divine: It was like poor man's first class .
Katie Rempe: I felt like a gold member Speaking of color.
James Divine: I sent you a really funny picture, from an airport,
Katie Rempe: so topical, Jim.
James Divine: So last week we talked about colorblindness and I just had to send this picture to Katie of me at The Kansas City airport where they have amazing non gender specific restroom, which is fabulous. Everyone walks in and you get a stall all to yourself.
Non specific restrooms are important for accessibility, but it's also more efficient as humans because then you don't have a line for one gender or the other. Just everyone can just use the bathroom. So it's actually more efficient from a just human perspective. So these bathrooms are super great.
The airport is brand new. It's only been open for nine months. And I think they're still working stuff out because they might be accessible to people gender wise, but I couldn't tell what stall was open because the only indicator was the light above the stalls.
It was like a confessional if you were Catholic and they can't tell the difference between red and green. So what I did was I sent Katie a picture and we'll post this. I sent Katie first the picture of the stalls as I see them.
Everything also was very grey and modern and so I couldn't tell the difference between the two colors. So I sent Katie the one with the colors zapped out. And I was like, which stalls are vacant and which are available? And she was like, I have no idea. Then I sent her the one with the color and she was like, Oh, so if they don't have some other indicator besides the color by itself. People with colorblindness can't tell which stall is open, except we look for other clues, like the doors are slightly ajar, or the doors were locked, it was okay, but.
Katie Rempe: Because it would have been so hard just to have a light that went on. Or off
James Divine: Or like on an airplane, it's red and green, but it's occupied or vacant. There you go.
Katie Rempe: Circle verse X. Yeah. Because what did we learn? Have more than one way to distinguish something outside of a color.
James Divine: Yes. Anyway, so it was a little example just from this, holiday weekend,
Takeaways
---
James Divine: what takeaways from this season, Katie, let's go back and forth. From the whole season that we've had on Color Magic.
Katie Rempe: One of my biggest takeaways, especially after talking to Stephanie about the beekeeper's quilt, don't take color too seriously. You know, So many people get choked up on which ones should I pick? Which look good together? Which look good with me?
And I just say, if you like the color. Just go with it. Yeah. If you think the colors are weird together, but you still like them, go for it. And just see what you could discover and introduce to other people that maybe it's more unique than other things that people are thinking of.
Have more fun with color.
James Divine: Which is brilliant about the beekeepers quilt because you can't really do it wrong.
Katie Rempe: Yep. Millions of little pixels coming together for that perfect focus of color. How about you? Yeah,
James Divine: that beekeeper's quilt is cool. Okay. One of mine is own your perception of color.
I felt like we were focusing on my color blindness a lot this season, but one of the really cool things about that was I had some healing about my color blindness and I realized, you know what, if it looks pink to me, then you go girl, go with it.
Who cares if you like that color then own it. Because we see so many people that are so tentative with their color perception, so I have more to say about that, but that's the big sort of takeaway.
Katie Rempe: One thing, that I've noticed talking to people in person about this is, Paying attention to the colors that you find yourself wearing. whEther it's a color that you're not aware of, that maybe is your medicine, like we talked about Oh, I need to be wearing this blue because I'm feeling a little bit chaotic and I need to be calmed down and blue is how I calm down.
So maybe you're finding you're wearing a lot of blue or, the opposite, maybe you're like, I need to get hyped up Yellow's my hype up color, so I'm finding I'm wearing a lot of yellow. So I would say be mindful of what colors you're wearing when, because that could be a powerful reflection on what you're trying to manifest in the world.
James Divine: It reminds me of something too, like I never wear green because I don't really see green very much, but every time I wear green, people comment. Oh, you look so good in that color. I love seeing you in green. I have one green shirt. I hardly ever wear.
I wonder, Katie, would you say, pay attention to the colors you never wear, and maybe that's something? I
Katie Rempe: wonder about that. Oh, absolutely.
Yeah. What colors are you avoiding? Good question. Yeah.
James Divine: Another takeaway for mine are colors are subjective. There's no objective purple sure. There's a color purple. Don't you think that most people would agree is purple? Somewhere in the mid-range when you get out to the edges of purple.
I think there's a lot of, perceptions on is it indigo is indigo purple, or is it navy blue? Or is it something between is that lavender? Is it sky blue? And I think there's a lot of opinions and input of others. And it doesn't have to be the gospel truth.
But people will fight about, don't you think people will fight about whether there's purple in that brown?
Katie Rempe: Yes. Yes. It's too yellow of a green. It's too blue of a purple. Absolutely.
James Divine: so it's okay for colors to be subjective, and it's okay for you to go back to that first point of own your perception, right? That's right.
Which is also aligned with you, which is pay attention to the colors that you choose. They're probably the ones you like.
Big key there. You
Katie Rempe: chose it initially for a reason. whIch then leads to my final point here, which is, don't have the color on hand. You have given us the gift of recalling that we can visualize any color and eventually We will believe that it is that color and when that belief is solid it becomes that color It's just the energy it represents So who cares if it's like a white yarn, but you need it to be gold If you're imagining it gold the whole time it will encompass those powers.
I think
James Divine: Now that's really magical. It reminds me of that internet meme when we had that dress that was either white or How did it
Katie Rempe: dress? Yeah, it was like blue and white or gold and White or blue and black versus gold and white or something like
James Divine: that. Yes something like that It was this weird like internet meme a number of years ago Where that dress was two different colors based on how you perceive it That wasn't colorblind people looking at that.
That was everyone arguing on the internet. I know no one argues on the internet now. Back then, they used to do that.
Katie Rempe: I'm so glad we've evolved as a race since then. I'm
James Divine: proud of us. evolved way beyond arguing on the internet. Oof,
anyway that is evidence of Our perception of color can be very much in the liminal. so you can really do that.
You can really imagine that white, white is also a universal color, so you can take on those attributes. That's true, too.
And so that goes along with mine, which is magic is subjective. You have colors that are influenced by the collective consciousness of everyone.
So most people are going to associate blue with the water or with the sky or with things that are blue. But there is a subjective association with that color based on your experience, your aversion to blue or your. Attractedness to blue, your personal experience with someone who loves or hates blue, the things that are blue in your life, your own experiences with blue.
So that counts also. So magic has a subjective quality to it and it's the collective consciousness and your experience. And so you can again, own that and you can incorporate that into your magic and encourage you to do that.
Katie Rempe: I feel like that's really been. Yeah. Thank you. The big message of this season is.
Embrace how you see it and the reactions that it gives you personally, because those are always the first, longest lasting impressions, I think. Yeah.
Let's take a quick break, and when we come back, we'll finish off the last episode of the season! We'll be right back.

A Rainbow of Spells
---
Katie Rempe: It is A Rainbow of Spells by, and I'm sure I'm going to butcher your name, but I'm going to try not to, Eileena,
James Divine: Eileena Abrav?
Katie Rempe: Elena Abruff. Abruff. Something along those lines,
oh, he just manifested
James Divine: that. I should have had it in there. It's a little book. It's so cute. Look how
Katie Rempe: little. What better to reference than a little rainbow book of spells if you're new into the world of color magic and you're like, I would like to know more than just like the basic four things that are on the internet.
This little reference guide, which is so conveniently in this tiny little put up, is ready to fit in your notions bag, your tote bag, your magical collection. Every section is color coordinated for easy reference. It even comes with a little bookmark,
James Divine: a ribbon bookmark that is some color that might be blue or purple.
I don't know.
Katie Rempe: And depending on who you ask, they'll argue it with you.
James Divine: She'll tell you about the traditional, meanings of colors. The everyday uses of the color and some ideas that are very. Inspiring some spells to do
and so there's all kinds of cool stuff in here That are associated with each of the colors. It's a cute little book super accessible I just think it's Perfect for our color magic season. I hope to have her on as a guest at some point, we weren't able to do that in time for this season. We adore her.
Look at how dang cute.
Katie Rempe: Future guest for sure from Australia. So we'll have to make, some time travel work, but we've done it before we've done the UK. We can do
James Divine: anything. I think we need to crack open the Knit A Spell budget and fly down to Australia. No
Katie Rempe: problem. We have tons of money available.
I gotta do a magic money spell real quick. Hold on, let me reference this. Where's
James Divine: that? Page 87.
Katie Rempe: If you are a listener of Knit A Spell and would like to host us at your house, let us know! [email protected]
can't wait to hear from you. So anyway, look forward to that in the future. But yes, it was just such a great timed book I think anyone who's interested in learning more about color magic will also enjoy it. And as always, we'll be sure to link the information to it in the details in the description.
Wearing Color Magic
---
Katie Rempe: We've talked a lot about individual colors, what they mean, but
how do we wear colors to be magical?
James Divine: There's lots of ways we can wear color, people are wearing color in clothing, makeup, jewelry, in their hair color. Thank goodness it's a lot more acceptable to dye our hair, wild primary colors, which I love.
So those are just some of the ways.
How do I wear color? I have three interesting little ways that I love to wear color. So if you see me in person, I even if you see me on camera, you know that I'm generally known quite often for wearing pretty wild and colorful shirts.
But if you see me in person, you may notice the thing that will usually not match my outfit and will also be wild They are my socks. I have a whole collection of multicolored polka dot socks that are my favorite thing to wear. And they're just like confetti. They're just little like firework feet.
I just love them. They ground me in like a cacophony of color and they just remind me of don't take it so seriously. I even have a pair of shoes that are like a Van Gogh type of super colorful shoes. So I just love to wear somehow on my feet grounded, like to have a whole bunch of color or to have a surprise.
Even if I'm wearing like a business suit, I will sometimes wear really nutty socks just as like a little wink to I'm a little out there. Would
Katie Rempe: you say they're a little off the cuff?
James Divine: They're definitely off the cuff. They're Off the ankle. How about you, Katie? Let's go back and forth.
Katie Rempe: So I also like wearing fun socks. I do find that I love using self striping yarn for socks because they can be very boring to knit.
But having that extra color, we're like, Oh, whoop, two more rows to this color, two more rows to that color. I find they knit up faster because I'm excited at the color change prospect, even if like I have nothing to do with it other than just knitting till the next color. It's very fun.
So that's cool. Yep. So I'm in into the fun socks for sure. Another place I like to wear fun colors specifically green for luck is underwear.
James Divine: TMI. No, I'm kidding.
Katie Rempe: Yes, green underwear. I just feel like it's the first layer on your body. It's all holding all the precious bits.
That's where you should want to be bringing in the luck and like your most powerful The thing you want concentrated most put it in those
James Divine: places. Yeah, it is very magical and there's a lot of magic that's done, with your root chakra and where the sort of like the entry of abundancy, the sort of like connection with your grounding for sure is that root chakra area of your pubis area, of your body.
And so to have that dark red for chakra area with the green of luck, and that's a really cool combo. I love that very magical.
are also a form of underwear. They're that first layer on my feet. We have a similar idea that first layer can have magical there's other religions and traditions that have magical garments and they're called garments, but magical underwear, right?
Yeah. Good points. We think about others that have those undergarments that are like. symbolic of your connection with the divine or your agreement with the divine.
I love having a color note that I pick up on that runs through my outfit. So if I have a sweater that is like a few different colors, like I used to have this rust colored sweater that had a fleck of different colors in it.
It had a fleck of blue, a fleck of green, a fleck of yellow. It was such a cool sweater. I would wear. A shirt underneath that would pick up on one of those little flecks that was in the yarn.
What is that kind of yarn called? Like a tweed? I guess it's called a tweed. That sort of primary color contrast that those colors were, that's what I would wear as a shirt underneath or as a necktie.
And then I would wear socks that color, or something else that would pick that up. And so those were always important to me is like, how do I carry that color through?
And when people would say, you can wear a shirt that doesn't have those colors in it, it goes. No, not to me. That was not okay. I
Katie Rempe: don't need another color on this rodeo. That makes my fashion designer heart. Soar because that is like the definition of cohesiveness. If this pattern doesn't show up again in another one or in another part of the same outfit, then like, why is it even there to begin with?
James Divine:
There has to be a cohesiveness also in the style. If the sweater is too modern and the shirt is too rustic, I can't wear them together. There's all these little guidelines that I tend to follow. And that's
Katie Rempe: why Jim looks so good all the time. I never really think about that. Maybe, yeah.
James Divine: But those are just things that I think about all the time, but as far as color, that's one of the things that I do, which is also why I tend not to wear very much red and green because I can't be sure
and I also ask people, I'm like, are these two very similar in color? I get opinions.
Katie Rempe: Always good to have a second opinion.
another way I wear color is, and we've talked about this before when it comes to my traveler's talisman is specifically with gray and invisibility.
But also more specifically, not when I'm like manning the vehicle. Don't do
James Divine: this while you're
Katie Rempe: driving. Yeah, I want to be fully visible while I'm driving. But while I'm traveling on an airplane, I would like to be almost completely invisible. Like you can serve me my drink and I want to get on the plane.
But otherwise, I would love to just be ignored the whole time. So I'm going to go for like gray outfit, something that is not like. Taking anyone's attention away, you could easily just go over me, just putting my energy all in a box and being like, all right, you live here until I need you, which is not right now.
So nobody notices me. That's what I go for.
James Divine: That's so cute. Cause when I'm on the airplane, I like to sit up front wearing a super bright pattern shirt and talk to the flight attendants. I'm always like, Richard, no one said anything about my shirt.
He just rolled his eyes. I'm like, I wore this shirt on purpose and no one even said anything. So I'm like, I can't wear this shirt traveling next time.
Katie Rempe: Too normal looking apparently. Yeah. Nobody wants to interface.
James Divine: That's rude. No one wants to talk to me. Don't travel with me, Katie.
I was always wondering why the Traveler's Talisman wasn't red and blue and yellow. I always wonder why it was such subtle colors. Now I understand. Oh,
Katie Rempe: that's actually a good idea.
I need like a. Extrovert traveler's talisman or something like my new best friend traveler's talisman and it'll be engaging enough to get people's attention so that you do talk to them. Yeah. That's a good idea. Alright. Filled with
James Divine: sparkles, with baubles hanging off it. Yeah. Fringe. Oh, yeah.
Fringe for days.
Katie Rempe: Okay.
James Divine: I see you. You have only one customer who would buy it.
Katie Rempe: Well, Jim, I can't wait to sell it to you.
That's right. Very reasonable priced. One of a kind even. Yeah. All right. What else is on your
James Divine: list? I wear color on my jewelry. So I tend to pick out like the gemstone that might be like, okay, what do I need? If I need protection, I'm going to wear a labradorite. iF I'm feeling like I want some luxury or some softness, I'll wear my pearl necklace.
But I also will really follow like we do with color magic. I'm going to be like, what? Piece of jewelry is pulling to me or is calling to me. So that's probably what I need. And so I'll also wear the jewelry that feels comfortable. Or what ring do I want to wear and on what finger will give me like, Oh, I probably need support in that area of my life.
Do I need support in my leadership? Because I'm wearing a ring on my index finger or in my ego and my self esteem, I'll wear a ring on my ring finger. So these are things, that also are good to reflect on.
Katie Rempe: it's funny. My last point is similar to this in a way, because I, as a knitter, avoid wearing accessories, like the plague, it always gets caught on something.
It's going to pull the yarn. It's going to pull on my sweater I'm clumsy. And so I find that I don't wear a lot of jewelry. instead, I will trim the hems of the sleeves, or around the bottom of the body or the neck, much like, you know, the Ukrainian magic technique that's where I might add a little decorative, or bind off in a certain color, that sort of a thing, where It's almost like places you would put jewelry, but it's not gonna catch on anything.
You've
James Divine: knit, you've made a knit a little red bracelet at the end of your sleeve. Yeah.
Katie Rempe: Yep. Or you could even put in, the beads and the crystals right into the knitting at that point if you wanted. That's
James Divine: cool. Yeah, that would be really cool. Like a metallic trim. I've seen sweaters with like metallic trim for
Katie Rempe: sure.
James Divine: Oh, that's really a good idea. Built in necklace. A little
Katie Rempe: something different. Yeah, exactly.
James Divine: So do you have a class on knitting with colors?
